Detection of Albumin in Urine
Description
In this virtual lab, students test urine samples for albumin at a virtual lab bench. They learn what albumin does in the body and why a damaged kidney lets it leak into urine. They then perform Heller’s test, the sulfosalicylic acid test and the heat coagulation test, and grade the amount of protein from the turbidity. Interactive experiments and quizzes accompany each section, followed by a final exam and a certificate of completion.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this lab, students will be able to describe the functions of albumin and explain how the healthy kidney keeps it out of urine. They will also be able to perform and interpret Heller’s, sulfosalicylic acid and heat coagulation tests, grade proteinuria, and relate albuminuria to kidney damage, high blood pressure and diabetes.
