Detection of Sugar in Urine

Description

In this virtual lab, students test urine samples for sugar at a virtual lab bench. They study the normal and abnormal constituents of urine, perform Benedict’s and Fehling’s tests, and estimate the amount of sugar from the colour of the precipitate. Interactive experiments and quizzes accompany each section, followed by a final exam and a certificate of completion.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lab, students will be able to describe the characteristics and constituents of urine and explain glucosuria and the renal threshold for glucose. They will also be able to perform and interpret Benedict’s and Fehling’s tests, estimate the sugar concentration from the precipitate colour, and relate the results to diabetes mellitus.
