Biological Waste Treatment
Description
This virtual lab shows how microbes clean wastewater and solid waste. Students measure BOD, COD and TSS, then build and run an activated sludge treatment plant. They also follow nitrogen and phosphorus removal, operate an anaerobic digester to produce biogas, and design a compost pile. Interactive experiments and quizzes accompany each section, followed by a final exam and a certificate of completion.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this lab, students will be able to define and measure the key wastewater parameters and explain how the activated sludge process works. They will also be able to describe how microbes remove nitrogen and phosphorus, and explain anaerobic digestion, biogas production and composting, including how to solve common operating problems.
