Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT) & Fibrinogen Testing

Description

This virtual lab covers two key coagulation tests: the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and plasma fibrinogen. Students perform the APTT manually, monitor heparin therapy, and use mixing studies to distinguish factor deficiencies from inhibitors. They then measure fibrinogen by the Clauss method using a calibration curve and perform the thrombin time. Interactive simulations and quizzes accompany each section, followed by a final exam and a certificate of completion.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lab, students will be able to perform and interpret the APTT, explain its use in heparin monitoring, and interpret mixing studies. They will also be able to measure fibrinogen by the Clauss method using a calibration curve and interpret abnormal fibrinogen and thrombin time results in conditions such as DIC, liver disease and hemophilia.
