Platelet Count, Bleeding Time, Clotting Time & Prothrombin Time
Description
This virtual lab introduces the laboratory assessment of hemostasis. Students count platelets by the manual hemocytometer method, by film estimation and by automated analyzers. They also perform the bleeding time by the Ivy and Duke methods, the whole blood clotting time, and the prothrombin time with INR calculation. Interactive simulations and quizzes accompany each section, followed by a final exam and a certificate of completion.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this lab, students will be able to count platelets by different methods and recognize sources of error such as pseudothrombocytopenia. They will also be able to perform and interpret the bleeding time, clotting time and prothrombin time, calculate the INR, and relate abnormal results to platelet, vascular and coagulation disorders.
