Reticulocyte Count & Blood Film Examination for Malaria Parasites

Description

This virtual lab covers two essential blood film techniques. Students prepare supravitally stained films and count reticulocytes manually, with and without a Miller disc. They then prepare and Giemsa-stain thick and thin blood films, examine them for malaria parasites, identify the species and stages, and calculate the parasite density. Interactive simulations and quizzes accompany each section, followed by a final exam and a certificate of completion.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lab, students will be able to prepare and count a reticulocyte preparation, calculate the reticulocyte indices, and distinguish reticulocytes from other red cell inclusions. They will also be able to prepare and stain thick and thin films for malaria, identify Plasmodium species and stages, calculate the parasite density, and interpret rapid diagnostic tests.
