Normal Hemoglobin Structure & Hemoglobin Electrophoresis
Description
This virtual lab explores the structure and function of normal hemoglobin. Students build heme groups and hemoglobin tetramers by dragging globin chains and hemes into place, and map the globin genes and the developmental switch from embryonic to adult hemoglobins. They also study oxygen binding and the factors that shift the oxygen dissociation curve. Interactive activities and quizzes accompany each part, followed by a final exam and a certificate of completion.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this lab, students will be able to describe the structure of heme and globin and the composition of HbA, HbA₂ and HbF. They will also be able to explain the globin gene clusters, developmental hemoglobin switching, cooperative oxygen binding, and the factors affecting oxygen affinity, including why HbF has a higher affinity than HbA.
