Red Cell Life Cycle, Osmotic Fragility & ESR

Description

This virtual lab follows the red cell from its production in the bone marrow to its destruction and the breakdown of hemoglobin. Students perform an osmotic fragility test and plot the fragility curve, then measure the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) by the Westergren method. Interactive simulations and quizzes accompany each section, followed by a final exam and a certificate of completion.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lab, students will be able to describe the red cell life cycle, its normal destruction, and the fate of hemoglobin breakdown products. They will also be able to perform and interpret an osmotic fragility test and discuss its applications, and measure the ESR and explain the factors affecting it.
