Hemoglobin Measurement, Hematocrit & Red Cell Indices
Description
This virtual lab covers the measurement of the basic red cell parameters. Students measure hemoglobin by the cyanmethemoglobin (HiCN) method using a virtual spectrophotometer, and standardize the method with a calibration curve. They then determine the hematocrit by the microhematocrit and Wintrobe techniques, and calculate the red cell indices. Interactive simulations and quizzes accompany each section, followed by a final exam and a certificate of completion.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this lab, students will be able to measure hemoglobin by the cyanmethemoglobin method, standardize it using a calibration curve, and determine the hematocrit by the microhematocrit and Wintrobe techniques while recognizing sources of error. They will also be able to calculate MCV, MCH and MCHC and use them to classify anemias morphologically.
