Hemocytometry Lab

Description

This virtual lab introduces the core manual techniques of the hematology laboratory. Students first perform red and white cell counts on an improved Neubauer hemocytometer and calculate the results. They then learn the chemical principle of Romanowsky stains, and prepare and stain a peripheral blood film using the wedge method and Leishman stain. Next, they examine the film systematically under the virtual microscope. The lab ends with identifying normal and abnormal red cell morphology, nucleated red cells, and the five normal white blood cells. Each section includes interactive simulations, real micrographs, and a short quiz, followed by a final exam and a certificate of completion.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lab, students will be able to perform and calculate manual RBC and WBC counts using a hemocytometer, and explain the principle of Romanowsky staining. They will also be able to prepare, stain, and systematically examine a peripheral blood film, including a differential leukocyte count. Finally, they will be able to recognize normal, abnormal, and nucleated red cells and identify the five normal white blood cells, relating these findings to their clinical significance.
