Build It! Bioremediation Lab 2
Description
Bioremediation Virtual Lab is an advanced, challenge-based lab for students who already know the principles of Lecture 4. Across eight interactive stations, students build and operate a biopile, choose soil treatment technologies, explore the Exxon Valdez biostimulation case, design groundwater treatment with PRB and ERD, set up a constructed wetland, sort heavy-metal removal mechanisms, run an Hâ‚‚S biofilter with EC and RE calculations, and use monitoring tools to prove biodegradation. The lab ends with a 20-question final quiz.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this lab, students will be able to select and justify the right bioremediation technology for soil, groundwater, surface water and air based on contaminant type, location, cost and time. They will be able to optimise operating conditions, calculate half-life, EC and RE, and interpret monitoring data from GC-MS, qPCR and CSIA to confirm biodegradation.
