Bioremediation Virtual Lab 3

Description

The Bioremediation Virtual Lab is an interactive simulator that walks students through a complete environmental biotechnology project, from site investigation to remediation. Learners sample a contaminated site, identify the contaminant classes present, and then choose between biostimulation and bioaugmentation strategies before deploying in situ or ex situ technologies suited to the affected zone. As the simulation runs, students can observe microbial degradation pathways unfold in real time, giving them a visual, process-based understanding of how bioremediation actually works rather than just a theoretical description of it.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lab, students will be able to define bioremediation and distinguish between its core mechanisms — degradation, detoxification, and immobilisation. They will be able to identify major contaminant classes and explain the factors that govern their bioavailability in the environment. Students will also be able to compare biostimulation, bioaugmentation, and monitored natural attenuation as remediation strategies, and match appropriate in situ and ex situ technologies to the specific zone requiring treatment. Finally, learners will be able to trace both aerobic and anaerobic degradation pathways, describe heavy-metal remediation mechanisms, and apply the eight controlling factors that predict degradation rate in a real-world scenario.
