This interactive virtual lab guides students through the production of bioethanol from date fruit and other environmental wastes, simulating a six-station bench workflow that ends with a fermenter setup and a final quiz. Students begin by sorting feedstocks (sugars, starches, and cellulose) into a conversion funnel to see how different raw materials all lead to the same fuel product, then progress through stations that sequence the specific chemical and biological steps used to convert date biomass and paper/food waste into ethanol via yeast fermentation. Learning Outcomes
By completing this lab, students will be able to explain what bioethanol is and describe the general process by which sugars and starches are fermented into ethanol using yeast or engineered microbes. They will be able to identify and classify feedstock types, sugar, starch, and cellulose, based on their chemical composition and role as fermentation substrates. Students will also be able to sequence the key stages of converting date fruit waste and food/paper waste into bioethanol, from feedstock preparation through fermentation, demonstrating an understanding of how diverse waste streams can be valorized into a renewable fuel. Finally, students will be able to apply this conceptual knowledge by correctly answering assessment questions that test their grasp of the overall bioethanol production pathway.
