Determination of pH

Description

In this interactive lab, students explore what pH means and how it's actually measured in practice. After building intuition for the pH scale and its relationship to hydrogen ion concentration, students test solutions using three real measurement methods: dipping pH paper and reading the color against a reference chart, adding universal indicator and watching a solution shift color across the full pH spectrum, and operating a virtual pH meter, complete with buffer calibration, electrode rinsing, and proper storage technique. Students then mix their own acidic and basic solutions on a virtual bench and test a bank of everyday and biological samples, including blood, urine, gastric fluid, and saliva, comparing how each method performs and when each is the right tool for the job.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lab, students will be able to explain what pH and pOH measure, apply the pH + pOH = 14 relationship, and classify solutions as acidic, neutral, or basic based on their pH value. Students will also be able to determine the pH of a solution using pH paper, universal indicator, and a pH meter, and describe the underlying principle behind each method, including why a pH meter must be calibrated and its electrode properly rinsed and stored. Finally, students will be able to identify the approximate pH of common biological fluids and everyday substances, and select the most appropriate pH measurement method for a given practical or clinical scenario.
