Virtual Lathe Machine Lab

Description

This virtual laboratory introduces engineering students to conventional lathe operation through a fully interactive machine simulator that mirrors a real practical turning session. Students begin by identifying the lathe's main parts — bed, headstock, chuck, tailstock, carriage, tool post, cross slide, lead screw, and feed rod — through a drag-and-drop labeling exercise, then operate a step-by-step virtual lathe: equipping safety gear, mounting a workpiece in the three-jaw chuck, removing the chuck key, aligning the cutting tool, setting spindle speed and feed rate, performing a facing operation, turning a workpiece diameter down to a target dimension over a specified length, stopping the machine, and measuring the result with a virtual caliper. Bonus stations let students explore drilling, parting-off, taper turning, and thread cutting using the same hands-on interaction pattern. Throughout the lab, students apply the spindle speed and machining time formulas to set real cutting parameters before driving the machine, and reflect on any difference between their measured and target dimensions to understand common sources of machining error.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lab, students will be able to identify the main parts of a conventional lathe machine and explain their functions; describe the working principle of turning and the correct sequence of setup and safety procedures, including the critical importance of chuck key removal before operation; correctly set up a workpiece and cutting tool and select appropriate spindle speed and feed using standard cutting-parameter formulas; perform and distinguish between basic lathe operations including facing, straight turning, drilling, and parting-off; measure a machined diameter and compare it against a target dimension; and identify and reason about common sources of machining error when measured results deviate from specifications.
