Paternal Care Lab

Description

The Parental Care Virtual Lab is an interactive, web-based simulation that lets students explore how and why animals invest in their offspring across the animal kingdom. Rather than passively reading about parental behavior, students actively manipulate the variables that shape it — dragging sliders to see how litter size, offspring age, and parental age affect the amount of care given, building a timeline of care from gamete production through post-birth provisioning, flipping through the five major care strategies (no care, bi-parental, female-only, male-only, and alloparenting), and running simulations of parent–offspring conflict such as weaning and carrying disputes. The lab also lets students examine the costs of caregiving (neonate-to-mother weight ratio, time spent lactating, energy spent carrying young) and confront the more extreme side of parental strategies, including infanticide, siblicide, and brood parasitism. Each station is grounded in real examples from the course lecture, spanning scorpions, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. The lab closes with a comprehensive field-exam quiz that ties every station's concepts together, giving students immediate feedback and a clear picture of which topics they've mastered.

Learning Outcomes

By completing this virtual lab, students will be able to: (1) define parental care, parental effect, and parental investment, and explain the cost–benefit trade-off between current and future reproduction; (2) describe the sequence of parental care behaviors from gamete production through post-hatching/post-birth provisioning, and identify how care varies across taxonomic groups; (3) analyze how factors such as brood size, offspring age, and parental age influence the amount of care an animal provides; (4) distinguish among the five parental care strategies (no care, bi-parental, female-only, male-only, alloparenting) and match each to real animal examples; (5) explain the evolutionary basis of parent–offspring conflict (e.g., weaning conflict, infant carrying, tantrum behavior) and of costlier or more extreme strategies such as infanticide, siblicide, and brood parasitism; and (6) apply this knowledge to novel scenarios through the lab's assessment quiz, demonstrating an integrated understanding of parental care behavior in animals.
